To trim or not to trim? That is the question

Trimming has been an issue that has been debated tirelessly among black women. We all have different views on the subject. Some women believe that they can go for years without trimming with no adverse effects, while others argue that it's more beneficial to trim on a regular basis in order to maintain the health of the hair strands.

So, to trim or not to trim? The answer to this question is ...it's up to the individual.

There are two main reasons why we trim our hair.

1. For a more aesthetically pleasing profile.

2. For hair health.

Is is necessary to trim your hair in order to maintain the health? I do believe so. For some who may not trim on a regular basis, they may notice that as time goes by, they still have to end up trimming, often times more than they would want to. Mainly because, hair gets damaged. It's such a fragile thing that even with the gentlest of treatment, our hair can still get damaged. It would benefit us to trim that damage away before it travels up the strands and affect the rest of the hair.

How often we trim is entirely up to the individual. Some people can actually go for years without trims and have to adverse effect to report. Then there are some who find it necessary to trim every 3 months or so to keep split ends at bay.

So regardless of time frame, trimming is necessary to maintain hair health. Our hair grows at an average rate of 1/4-1/2 inch a month. Some may experience less growth, some more. So trimming away 1/4 - 1/2 inch every 3-4 months is still way less that the growth you would receive.

So you can still retain length while keeping the hair ends healthy and aesthetically pleasant to look at. Hence my stand on trimming is a resounding YES!

Some simple tips for trimming.

Hair can be trimmed wet or dry, though it is easier to trim wet hair.

Make sure that your scissors are very sharp or you will end up damaging your ends.

If you are allowing a stylist to trim your hair, pay attention to how much they are trimming off. Never allow anyone to cut more of your hair than you're willing to let go off.

If you have curly hair, be sure to cut your hair considerably longer than where you want it to hit your body. Curly hair shrinks when dry so you should allow room for this.

And last but not least relax. Your hair is growing daily so it will grow back if you cut it too short or mess up a bit.
