In this article, we will address the basics of regimen building. In a follow up article, we will go deeper into other products and techniques.
Basic hair care staples you will need.
A Moisturizing shampoo
A Protein conditioner
A Moisturizing deep conditioner
A Detangling leave in conditioner
A Water based moisturizer
A Sealant
Moisturizing Shampoo
Start by choosing a moisturizing shampoo that is devoid of Sodium Laureth sulfate. The purpose of a shampoo is to gently cleanse the scalp and hair. You will need a shampoo that will not leave your hair feeling stripped of it’s natural oils and moisture.
Protein Conditioner
The purpose of a protein conditioner is to restore the hair of natural protein that may be lost during chemical processing. Or simply to coat the shaft of the hair with protein (which the hair is made of) strengthening the strands in the process. Start by looking for conditioners that contain Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Hydrolyzed rice protein.
Moisturizing Conditioner
A moisturizing conditioner’s purpose is to restore moisture to the hair especially after a protein treatment or chemical services. This is a major step and should never ever be skipped. Do not be afraid to select a moisturizing conditioner that contains certain proteins. We will address the different types of proteins in another article. Wheat protein, cotton seed protein or silk amino acids are all designed to add moisture to your strands.
Leave In Conditioner
The purpose of a leave in conditioner is to coat the strands helping to seal the cuticles. They also help to tame the hair and provide slip for an easier detangling process.
Water based moisturizer.
You will need a daily water based moisturizer to add moisture to your strands. This should be used as needed. Usually 2-3 times a week is fine. Some people may need it daily but only use a small amount as too much can weigh down strands and cause heavy product buildup.
Sealant
The purpose of a sealant is to seal the cuticles to help aid in moisture retention. Sealants are usually oil or silicon based.
Use in conjunction with each other and in the exact order and you will be well on your way to a head full of beautiful healthy hair.
